Anyone who reads this site semi-frequently will remember my obsession with the P800 while it was nearing release. When the thing finally came out it was just a little underwhelming, and I just couldn't convince myself to buy one. It was something to do with that strange shade of pale blue that reminded me of the
Codestore site that put me off.
Anyway, the P900 is due for release over here soon, and has already been released in other countries. The photos of the thing popping up show that it looks like a much more polished phone. Although the only real improvements (apparently) are that it is now a bit smaller, and the internal ram has been upgraded to 48mb from the previous 32mb, when combined with the new sleek and silver look that might be enough to convince me to buy one.
Some downsides to the P900 are that it doesn't appear to have IR support, only Bluetooth. They still only take the low capacity duo memory sticks, and while the mp3 player supports quite a few formats, it's missing a couple such as WMF and OGG.
You can read more on the Official SonyEricsson Page.
Nokia also have a new offering to be released soon, the 6600. It looks a little bit fat and rounded, but has a camera, a video player, the standard 65,536 colour display (which runs at a resolution of 176 x 208 pixels) that all phones seem to have these days, 6mb internal memory, and a slot for further expansion. It comes bundled with RealOne player, and the phone itself is running SymbianOS. I really would like to like this phone, as I've always been a staunch Nokia follower, but it just seems to lack a couple of things:
MP3 playback - I have no idea why MP3's on my phone are such a big deal for me, but they just are. Deal with it.
Lack of memory expansion. 6mb internal is ok for standard phone use, and hopefully will be enough to store a fair amount of contacts / appointments / stupid renditions of current pop tunes as Polymorphic ringtones to piss off people in your general surrounding area, but most people will want to expand it - Nokia are notorious for lack of expansion in their phones, and looking through the tech specs on the 6600 page they fail to mention which of the current 29382 memory card formats is supported in the 6600. I suspect it's a crappy one.
Look at it! Its massive! Apparently a current tester of this phone is calling it the "who ate all the pies" phone!
However - Nokia T9 predictive is definately the best in the market (although that comment is based on a pre-Symbian model), and their PC Suite is a very comprehensive set of Software tools for anyone with a laptop.
Whatever you think about the size and shape of the 6600, you have to admit that it looks nicer than this!
