Welcome to Merauderweb

You can like, train a n00b

...but he'll just be a trained n00b.

So, in on Saturday as one of the WAN links is down, and I somehow offered to take a look as I happen to live 5 mins from the office (talk about mixed blessings on that one huh). So I do a bit of pinging, and it looks like it's an ISP issue with one of the 10mb fiber links. Weird as the other one is fine.. so whatever. I call the ISP, and sit on hold for like 25 mins - they have some music holding, but the stupid operator recording comes on every 10 seconds, and lasts for 5 seconds (yes, after the first few minutes I timed it). So that means that out of every minute, I spend 1/3rd of the time (20 seconds) listening to the "We apologise..." message, and it's managed to give me a fucking headache.

It's always a worry when you get through and the dude on the other end asks "What's your login name?" .. dude, it's fiber - it just plugs in, no login required. So you're obviously sitting amongst residential n00b support, and hence aren't going to be a lot of use to me. We spent 10 minutes trying to find our company record (partly my fault for not having the customer id handy, partly some n00bs fault for entering our company name as "Accounts Payable", but whatever). Next, I spend 10 mins trying to explain to him which link is at fault - his question of "What server do you login to?" not really being too useful. Those kinds of questions worry me. So finally he reads me the id's given to the links down on the account sheet, and I'm thankful that someone decided to give them id's which actually help me explain to this guy which one is fault. Finally, the good news that it wont be him actually looking at it, and that he's off to hand the data to someone else.. phew..

So I'm sitting here waiting and practising my micro (which is already pretty uber, but there's always room for improvement).
